AI Has the CFO’s Attention. Has It Reached the Workflow?
A strategy mandate can arrive before operational change. IBM’s September 30 survey gives stock researchers a useful reason to separate AI ambition from evidence of execution.
IBM and Oxford Economics surveyed 1,500 CFOs and equivalent senior finance leaders across 33 geographies and 26 industries during February–April 2026. IBM published the findings on September 30. These are respondents’ self-reported assessments, not a census of all companies or IBM’s own operating results.
62% said their role had expanded into enterprise technology or AI strategy leadership. Only 6% described finance as transformation-ready, with AI consistently embedded in workflows and decision-making at scale. The percentages answer different questions: they are not a conversion funnel, and subtracting them does not measure failed projects.
Investor worksheet — three questions to take to a company’s next filing or earnings call:
1. Budget: Which spending is experimental, which is recurring, and who approves it? Separate project expense from infrastructure commitments.
2. Workflow: Which process actually changed? Look for a named task, its baseline, and a repeatable measurement rather than a list of tools purchased.
3. Results: Does management reconcile implementation costs with realized operating outcomes? Check the period, denominator and accounting treatment before comparing companies.
These are our research questions, not results reported by the survey. A strategic role is evidence of organizational attention; it does not establish financial return. A vendor-sponsored, self-reported survey can help generate questions, but company filings are needed to test them. The two survey percentages alone establish neither demand for IBM products nor IBM revenue growth.
