ExxonMobil Added $888M of Profit. The Segments Moved Opposite Ways.
A rising company profit total can conceal falling businesses underneath it. ExxonMobil’s latest results offer a useful research exercise: reconcile the change across the same segment table before deciding whether improvement was broad or concentrated. The total and the individual businesses answer different questions.
Read the dates and comparison first
ExxonMobil released third-quarter results on October 30, 2026. This note reviews that announcement on October 31 in Beijing. The quarter ended September 30. The comparison below is third quarter versus second quarter of 2026, not year over year. All amounts are U.S. dollars in millions, using the issuer’s U.S. GAAP earnings table.
Start with the company total
Total earnings increased from 14,525 to 15,413, a rise of 888. These are earnings, not revenue or cash flow. Keep the measurement label beside the number: a larger earnings total alone does not establish that sales, cash generation and every segment improved together.
Open the total into five movements
Our subtraction of the reported segment figures produces five contributions. Upstream moved from 7,927 to 7,088, down 839. Energy Products rose from 5,465 to 7,169, up 1,704. Chemical Products fell from 1,131 to 735, down 396. Specialty Products increased from 956 to 1,285, up 329. Corporate and Financing changed from negative 954 to negative 864, an improvement of 90.
Reconcile before interpreting
The five changes sum to the company increase: negative 839 plus 1,704 minus 396 plus 329 plus 90 equals 888. Energy Products contributed more than the net increase because other movements offset part of it. Corporate and Financing improved while remaining negative; an improvement is not the same as becoming profitable.
Keep arithmetic separate from causes
This bridge is our calculation from the issuer’s table. It reconciles where the reported change appears, but does not independently identify why each business changed. For that, read the company’s segment commentary and relevant disclosures. Do not turn the bridge into a prediction about oil prices, next-quarter earnings or the stock.
Save a repeatable research receipt
Record four items with a shortlist: the reporting period and comparison window; units and GAAP basis; every segment change, including negative corporate items; and the original source. Check that the parts reconcile to the total. Then ask whether the next release shows a similar concentration or a different mix. Consistent definitions make that follow-up useful.
