IBM: A $455M Profit Increase, but Only $67M More Before Tax
An earnings-growth headline can conceal very different changes above and below the tax line. Before treating a higher bottom line as evidence of faster operating growth, build a two-row bridge. IBM's latest quarterly disclosure provides an example that can be checked with ordinary subtraction.
Start with the same income measure
IBM released Q3 2026 results on October 21, covering the three months ended September 30. Its comparative GAAP table reports income from continuing operations of $2,199 million versus $1,744 million a year earlier. These are continuing-operations figures, not the separate total-net-income row, diluted EPS, or operating non-GAAP earnings.
Put the tax provision beside pre-tax income
For that same quarter, income from continuing operations before income taxes was $2,497 million versus $2,430 million. The income-tax provision was $298 million versus $686 million. The release reports effective tax rates of 11.9% and 28.2%, respectively. Read all three rows together before interpreting the profit change.
Reproduce the change in dollars
Our arithmetic is a $67 million increase in pre-tax income and a $388 million decrease in the tax provision. Together, 67 + 388 = 455, matching the increase from $1,744 million to $2,199 million in continuing-operations income. IBM rounds the respective year-over-year growth rates to 3% before tax and 26% after tax. This is our mechanical bridge using company-reported amounts, not a company attribution of operating causes.
Separate the bridge from an explanation
The tax row explains where much of the mathematical difference sits; it does not, by itself, explain why the tax provision changed. Review the relevant tax disclosures before deciding which items are recurring, jurisdictional or discrete. Nor does a smaller income-tax provision establish an equal cash-tax saving or a cash refund. An income-statement expense and a cash-flow payment answer different questions.
Make the next research step explicit
Keep four columns in a personal earnings note: period, exact income measure, pre-tax change, and tax-provision change. Then add a separate question about persistence. Do not annualize the lower tax rate or assume the same benefit repeats next quarter without evidence. This process helps a researcher distinguish a reproducible calculation from an unsupported forecast.
