IBM Bob Goes Self-Hosted. Where Does the AI Actually Run?

Original SignalSage conceptual IBM Bob deployment diagram. A purple customer-managed environment contains code, Bob and a supported local model in the upper path. A lower orange path connects Bob to a supported external model service. Local inference and hybrid inference are different configurations; self-hosted Bob does not automatically mean every model is local. Product page dated September 30 and news release October 1, 2026. For IBM stock research, deployment location is a useful adoption question: can a development team use AI without sending restricted code to an external model? Bob’s new option requires reading the model configuration, not just the self-hosted headline.

Two dates, one product change

IBM’s product page is dated September 30, 2026 and announces general availability. Its October 1 news release describes self-hosted Bob for customer-controlled infrastructure. These are dated company announcements, not a claim about today’s news ranking.

Two routes through the same boundary

IBM describes supported on-premises models, including air-gapped configurations, and hybrid connections to supported external model services. With a supported self-hosted model setup, code, development context and build artifacts can remain in the customer-managed environment. A hybrid configuration can use an external service. The word self-hosted alone does not establish where inference runs.

Ask who operates and licenses the model

At general availability, customers provide access to a supported model. IBM lists NVIDIA Nemotron and Poolside Laguna for self-hosted use. Eligible existing licenses can be used through bring-your-own-license arrangements. Optional Premium Packages for Java Modernization, IBM i and IBM Z carry applicable licensing and deployment requirements.

A concrete research comparison

Consider two hypothetical development teams: one works on restricted core banking code, the other on a less restricted application. The first would evaluate supported local inference; the second might evaluate an approved external service. This is an illustrative architecture comparison, not evidence that a named customer deployed Bob or that SignalSage tested it.

What would strengthen the investment case?

Track disclosed customer adoption alongside the associated software, model and infrastructure costs. Ask whether pilots become paying deployments and whether modernization work creates recurring software use or services demand. Those are research questions. This product release does not quantify incremental IBM revenue, margins or customer savings. Keep commercial results separate from deployment capability.
