NIKE's Margin Improved. Why Did Gross Profit Fall?

A better margin percentage can still produce fewer profit dollars. NIKE’s October 1 results offer a practical stock-research check: read the ratio and its revenue denominator together before calling a turnaround complete.
Match the quarter and units
These are fiscal Q1 2027 results for the quarter ended August 31, 2026, compared with the quarter ended August 31, 2025. Fiscal-year labels do not mean the results came from calendar 2027.
The percentage improved
NIKE reported gross margin of 42.8%, versus 42.2% a year earlier: an increase of 60 basis points, or 0.6 percentage points. The company attributed the improvement primarily to lower warehousing and logistics costs. This is gross margin, not operating margin.
The sales base got smaller
The income statement shows revenue of $11.213 billion, versus $11.720 billion. NIKE describes the decline as 4% on a reported basis and 5% on a currency-neutral basis. Those are different measurement bases; do not combine them.
Now check the dollars
Reported gross profit was $4.798 billion, versus $4.943 billion. Subtracting the two gives a $145 million decline, our calculation from NIKE’s reported figures. Gross profit equals revenue less cost of sales; the ratio rose while a smaller revenue base reduced the dollars available before other expenses. Gross profit is neither net income nor cash flow.
A useful next research question
Track sales recovery alongside margin quality, selling and administrative costs, and operating cash flow in the next filing. A cost improvement does not by itself establish demand recovery.
